Fall Harvest, Preserving an abundance

Fall is in full swing! I don’t know about you, but I’m enjoying the graying days of familiarity. I was born and raised in the great Pacific Northwest and every year I become more attached and grateful to be truly apart of this gifted geographical location. So many foods are grown here in Washington and Oregon alone, we really have it super easy. We are lucky to have such mild wet weather that allows for all these foods to flourish!

This week is full of fun events! All of which celebrate and work towards preserving the native abundance of the PNW.

Sept. 15th Camas Farmer’s Market. 3pm to 7:30pm. If you haven’t yet had the chance to stop by the Market all this summer, these last few weeks are your last chance. Stop by and stock up and meet your farmers. You may be surprised to learn that they’ll have a few foods to offer all year long and would be willing to work out a deal with you. Keeping it local is the best when it comes to the foods that nourish our body and soul!

Sept. 18th Lacamas Lake Lily Field Restoration 9am to 12 noon. Come out and help plant Camas Lily Seeds, take a whack at invasive species that endanger the lily plants such as Scotch Broom and take a bite of the Camas Lily Root, the food of abundance of the local Native Americans and the namesake of our community! 2784 SE Crown Road, Camas, WA   RSVP:Teresa Fernandez, 619-1124 or emailcityparks.volunteercoordinator@ci.vancouver.wa.us

Sept. 18th Fall Harvest Community Potluck 5:30 pm A kid friendly, community building event sponsored by the Co-op for everyone. Bring a dish, large or small, or none at all! We just want to share your company and conversation! This event will become a monthly event happening every Third Saturday of the month! Featured this month!! Fresh Apple Cider right before your eyes! Bring some apples if you’d like. That’s right, we’ll have a cider press right on sight! Camas Friends Church, enter through the double doors on the south side of the building, accessible through the parking lot.

Sept. 21st Co-op Planning Meeting 7pm to 9pm Every Third Tuesday are planning meeting nights. Have any ideas, thoughts, suggestions about the Camas Food Cooperative? Please attend and share them, we want and love community feedback! Check out the Meeting tab for more information, located at the top of this page.

The 3rd Annual Farm to Table Gala will take place on September 25th at 6:00pm. Please join us for a culmination of fresh local foods, great entertainment, exciting raffle prizes and more.

The Co-op has a table so when you purchase tickets try to let them know your purchasing for a spot at the Co-op table – I’ll be there volunteering! Big thanks to the Farmer’s Market for letting the Co-op set up both all summer free of charge,  show your thanks by being served a big yummy local dinner!

  1. I am interested in joining the co-op. How much is membership and what all does it entail. My phone number is 971-275-2009. My family moved to Camas in November and we are interested in learning how to be self sustaining and protect our environment.

    • Hello Sheri,

Thank you for wanting to join. At this point in time the Co-op has no membership available, other than receiving our monthly e-newsletter and attending the monthly meetings and potlucks. We are just now creating our steering committee and editing the bylaws for the cooperative. When we do create membership we estimate that the cost of membership will be between $100 and $180 one lifetime total. I’m hoping to also offer a payment option where the member will be required to pay a smaller amount on a monthly or yearly basis till the reach the total amount. But as we are just starting up that might make it a bit difficult for us when we are trying to raise capital to open the store front.

Again, thank you for your interest, we love it!
      Cheers,
      Michelle Week
